Folk dance sounds a bit dusty and sedate to some ears …, we’ll be happy to convince you otherwise! We dance folklore in a lively, sophisticated, cheerful and artistic way! If you feel like it, you can learn the basic steps of the polka, waltz, mazurka and turn in our folk dance course every Thursday evening from 25.10.2018 as well as how to use them in interesting and varied dances.
Folklore visit from Denmark
Goddag, welcome! Yesterday we were enriched by a folklore visit from Denmark. We gave an insight into our weekly training in the Alte Mensa, explained elements of the versatile German folklore and showed examples from our current stage program. We were then able to admire Danish dances and finally learned from each other by dancing together – and we realized that our cultural origins are not so different … Hjertelig tak!

International ribbon tree dance & folklore dances
A special highlight in Dresden every year: the ribbon tree dance around the maypole erected live by regional carpenters, which international students and young academics from TU Dresden of around 15 different nationalities will perform in their traditional national costumes at the opening of the Dresden Spring Market. Afterwards, the audience will be invited to join in some convivial folk dancing and the TU Dresden folklore dance ensemble “Thea Maass” will perform several stage dance choreographies.

International ribbon tree dance with folklore festival on Dresden's Altmarkt
Dresden danced colorfully into May with international students from over 20 nationalities from our folk dance course and with our folklore dance ensemble. After the traditional maypole on the Altmarkt in Dresden – erected by carpenters from the region – was danced around with long ribbons, the audience was also able to take part in convivial folk dances. A city with many people and cultures to experience a tradition together with a lot of joy and dance! The folklore dance ensemble then presented various dances from its repertoire, creating a great atmosphere and generating much applause.

Wir feiern 65 Jahre FolklorWe celebrate 65 years of folklore dance at the TU Dresden!
“Dance folklore is immortal. Nourished by the traditions of primitive peoples, kept alive across artificially created national borders, enriched by exchange, it still shows today how the folk art of dance has continuously developed.” (DNN, 22.11.15)
No, we did not celebrate the retirement on 21.11.2015 in the Kulturhaus Freital, but celebrated 65 years of folklore dance at the TU Dresden and our successful continuation – with 20 choreographies, danced by young talents, our active ensemble members and TUTE alumni.
Our ensemble for an open-minded Dresden!
The folklore dance ensemble “Thea Maass” from TU Dresden with dancers from all over the world would also like to set an example for xenophilia and a culture of togetherness in Dresden and is therefore showing solidarity with the “#WOD – Initiative weltoffenes Dresden”. Our ensemble is also emphatically positioning itself for an open society, tolerance and solidarity, not least in Saxony, and is calling for participation in the star run under the motto “Herz statt Hetze” on Monday, 19.10.2015 in Dresden!
Performance at the Meißen Wine Festival 2015
A few impressions of one of our so many performances booked in between – the audience on September 30, 2015 in Meissen, consisting of all generations, was very enthusiastic about our half-hour program with the choreographies “Rühler Springer”, “Neckmazurka”, “Winzertanz”, “Wer zuerst am Maibaum ist …”, “Hütejungen” and “Varsovienne”.
