On 25 January 2009, the folklore dance ensemble “Thea Maass” will start the year with a lively guest performance at the big gala program of the children’s and youth dance studio of the TU Dresden. A small selection of the current dance repertoire is intended to provide an insight into the world of lively and soulful folkloristic stage dance.

The focus of the choreographies is the artistic realization of customs from the various regions of Germany.
To this end, the themes and forms used are modified and reinterpreted for the stage. The aim is a sensitive but also lively presentation. On January 25, 2009, various motifs will be presented in dance: the “Rural Waltz” consists of the most beautiful waltz forms in Germany, and in the cheerful “Winegrowers’ Festival” various wine-making processes are presented in dance. “Young men and women meet at the Whitsun fountain to clean and decorate it. A boy dressed as a frog (the symbol of fertility) invites the girls to dance. Finally, in the “Old Polka”, a young couple forgets all about their work in the fields as they dance and banter.

In addition to folklore, the TUD’s children’s and youth dance studio is particularly dedicated to modern dance styles, jazz, modern dance and hip-hop. When the dancers have outgrown childhood and adolescence, they often form the next generation of the TU dance ensemble. Thanks to the support of the Gesellschaft von Freunden und Förderern der TU Dresden and the Studentenwerk Dresden, both ensembles are able to realize new artistic projects this year.
